ANNOUNCEMENTS:

BRAND NEW PASS SHIRTS!

Members can now pick up their brand new PASS shirts and lanyards at the GBM! All registered members that have paid their dues are eligible to pick them up at the GBM. Congratulations to Si Yi Zhang and Amina Ahmed for designing the shirt.

3rd GENERAL BODY MEETING-BEING A DOCTOR FOR THE NAVY

Wednesday, Feb. 17th 7:00pm-8:00pm Price Center Theater

An officer from the US Navy will explain to us the benefits of letting the government pick up that heavy debt you will have from medical school. What is it like being a doctor for the Navy? What is it like to travel around the world as a doctor? What are the requirements? You may pay your dues. Officers will be able to answers your questions too.

PASS MENTOR-MENTEE PROGRAM

Need help finding the best classes and professors? Which major is best for your future goals? What about internships and research opportunities? Come learn from experienced pre-meds and make some new friends! The PASS Mentor-Mentee program is a fantastic resource for freshmen and upperclassmen alike! If you have not signed up for the mentor/mentee program and would like to participate, please send an email to hufeng@ucsd.edu with the following info: name, email address, year, and major.

MEMBERS WHO USED PAYPAL

If you used PayPal on our website to pay for dues and had someone other than yourself pay using a credit card (a parent perhaps?) then please email Secretary Jenny to check that dues went under your name and not that of the payee. Email pass@ucsd.edu with your name and the name of the individual who paid for you.

CPR SOCIAL

Sign up and enjoy a fun and also very educational social experience taught by one of UCSD canyon view instructors for only $5 per person! This is a great deal considering how expensive CPR classes are outside. Also it’s very handy skill to have on your resume. It’s easy and pressure free. There is only 12 spots available so clear your Sunday morning. Email Shadi to sign up.

UPCOMING VOLUNTEERING PROJECTS

ROOM VISITS

Saturdays:  Feb 27th, March 6th

Time: 1:30pm-3:30pm

Sit and make a new friend by visiting with an elderly member of the classical residence in La Jolla. This project provides the opportunity to spend time with and brighten the day of one of our city’s very own pearls of wisdom. We will be responsible for providing tea and cookies for the residents as well as taking them for walks in the park. Everyone can make a difference, your day may even be brightened! Rides will be provided or if you would like to drive yourself you will be reimbursed. Meet at Sungod. Email Lindsy if you are interested. This is a great and relaxing event, be sure to check the website for the dates!

 

WALK FOR WISHES 2010

Join PASS and our team as we raise support for children with illness in SEA WORLD! Walk For Wishes® presented by SeaWorld, will include a 1-mile route through SeaWorld, with an optional 4-mile course along beautiful Mission Bay. After the walk there will be activities, refreshments and entertainment for the whole family. And, all walkers will receive 50% off admission to SeaWorld. Please join us in raising important funds to benefit our special wish kids!
Share the Power of a Wish® and help us make dreams come true for children with life-threatening illnesses!Your registration fees will be donated directly to Make-A-Wish.

14TH ANNUAL STRIDE AND RIDE FOR MDA

Coordinator: Mala Dorai (mdorai@ucsd.edu) Sunday, Feb. 28th 8:30am-11:30am

MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. Join PASS as we support the MDA by attending their STRIDE and RIDE event! The 14th Annual Stride and Ride 2010 will be a festive day of fun for friends and family. The “Stride & Ride” 5K Walk will be a day of fun-in-the-sun at the beautiful shoreline of Mission Bay. There will be great food prizes and entertainment. Please meet at Sungod Parking Lot at 8:30am. Please let Mala know if you could drive, you will be reimbursed for gas money.

 

PREUSS SCHOOL TUTORING

Coordinator: Lisa Sugimori (lsugimor@ucsd.edu) Ongoing and all day project

Dates: Feb 20th, Feb 27th, March 6th, March 13th, March 20th, March 27th, April 2nd (New Preuss School Orientation)

The Preuss School, located on the University of California San Diego (UCSD) campus in La Jolla, California, is a charter middle and high school dedicated to providing a rigorous college prep education for motivated low-income students who will become the first in their families to graduate from college. Preuss has classes from 6th grade to 12th grade and the classes meet from 9am to 4pm M-F and 9-11am on Saturdays. Volunteer tutors usually come in for an hour and a half, twice a week (Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday).
To become a volunteer tutor email Lisa Sugimori at lsugimor@gmail.com for the volunteer application and she will set up your orientation. Volunteers need to provide a proof of TB test result that is no more than 60 days old. If you have it, bring a copy of the results to the orientation. TB tests can be obtained at UCSD student health. Additionally, you will need to provide a copy of a government issued photo identification (driver’s license, passport, military identification, US or other government identification). (Student identification cards do no satisfy this requirement.)

 

2010 SAN DIEGO UNDY 5000

Join PASS as we raise money and support for colorectal cancer awareness!
What is the Undy 5000?
The Undy 5000 is a 5000 meter (5K) walk/run to raise awareness about colorectal cancer. Participants in the Undy 5000 events are encouraged to draw attention to their bottoms—and colorectal cancer—by participating in their underwear.
The Colon Cancer Alliance (CCA) is a national patient advocacy organization dedicated to ending the suffering caused by colorectal cancer. In order to increase rates of screening and survivorship, CCA provides patient support, education, research and advocacy across North America.

 

*To join a project, you must email the event’s coordinator with a request to be added to the list of attendees, or sign up with the coordinator at a general body meeting. If you have them, please don’t forget to wear your PASS shirts to projects and socials!
